I am the 2007 American Chemical
Society Medal awardee for Encouraging Disadvantaged
Students into Careers in the Chemical Sciences. My
research and student mentoring have been highlighted
by SACNAS, AAAS, and the NSF. My circuitous route to
a career in analytical geochemistry began at the
College of New Jersey where I earned a BS in
Biology. I completed my master’s and doctoral
degrees in Earth and Environmental Science at the
University of Rochester focusing on high temperature
trace element chemistry. During my post-doctoral
fellowships at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
and at Old Dominion University I leveraged my
expertise in high temperature chemistry into
collaborative research projects with biologists and
oceanographers.
Ever inspired by the unique
behavior of metals and small biomolecules during
phase transition from aqueous to vapor my research
has developed unique analytical techniques and
technologies to study the behavior of chemicals in
natural systems. The underlying theme of my research
and that of my students is mass spectrometry. My
students and I hold several patents in areas of
sample introduction technologies of mass
spectrometric identification of important biological
molecules. In 2005 I formed a new company,
Hyphenated
Solutions, with two of her graduate students.
This company now provides sample introduction
systems to industry leaders such as PerkinElmer and
Cetac Technologies.
