Dr. Johnson's research focus has been on the population genetics of groups which have been impacted by stocking/harvesting programs and other anthropogenic effects. Much of his research has investigated the genetics of the blackbass (Micropterus) and catfish (Ictalurus) by way of allozyme and mitochondrial DNA analysis. Additionally, his investigations of bivalves have shown how water quality changes and shell harvesting can dramatically affect genetic diversity and structure. He has also been involved in several projects studying stream dynamics of sportfish.
