  Why another Summit?

3rd Annual National Environmental Studies and Sciences Jonesboro, AR
May 22 - 24, 2008

The 3rd Annual Environmental Studies and Sciences Summit is planned for Summer 2008 in Jonesboro AR, hosted by Arkansas State University, the Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences and the Department of Biological Sciences. The third summit is a sequel to the very successful Santa Barbara (2006)and Syracuse Summits (2007) on Environmental Studies.

What makes the Summits so successful is, in part, the informal participatory structure which leads to thoughtful discussion and builds community around issues that deeply affect our community.  We intend to build on that experience in Jonesboro, which is why we invite your active engagement in brainstorming about the event. An electronic discussion group will begin in the Fall of 2007 so please join us.  Also feel free to send your suggestions (topics, speakers, field trips, etc.) to the conference organizers.

The third Summit aims to emulate previous summits while taking advantage of the rich educational, natural, and historic environment of Northeastern AR and the Mississippi Delta. We will draw upon local treasures and local case studies in the Mississippi Delta. Our keynote speakers will kick-off discussions related to diversity in environmental studies and sciences, development of curricula across the disciplines, assessment of programs, the community need for a peer-reviewed journal in environmental studies and sciences, and the further growth of the Environmental Studies and Sciences Association.

We hope that Summit participants will take advantage of the field trips and other opportunities to get to know the area and experience the rich cultural and environmental heritage of the Delta.
