Frequently Asked Questions
Applicants should
identify a potential advisor prior
to be admitted into the EVS. The
advisor must be an
EVS Faculty
Member. The faculty member must
contact the EVS office and confirm
that they have accepted the
applicant as an advisee. Applicants
may want to inquire if the faculty
member has funding for a Graduate
Research Assistant (GRA) position.
In order to be
considered for a University Graduate
Assistantship, you will need to have
your application complete and in the
Graduate School prior to
mid-February for Fall admission and
prior to mid-October for Spring
admission. Otherwise, applications
should be complete and in the
Graduate School by mid-March.
The cost of living
in the Jonesboro area is lower than
many comparably sized cities. You
can compare cost of living at
Money.com's web site.
Generally,
students are only accepted for Fall
semester. Our orientation is held in
early fall, and the EVS financial
support is only available in Fall
semester, and usually the support is
for the entire school year.
Students may inquire about Spring
admission and if funds are available
and the student is qualified for
admission they may be admitted for
Spring.
The stated minimum
GRE score for students to be
accepted into the EVS is a sum of
1100 on the verbal and quantitative
portions of the GRE. All materials
in your application will be
evaluated by the EVS Program
Committee (EVS), and a decision will
be made based on the total package
which you submit.
Arkansas State
University has a
Housing Office that handles
applications for housing, and the
information you need to apply can be
sent to you by contacting the
Residence Life Office directly. For
students who would like to live off
campus, we do not have an Off-campus
Housing Office, however available
housing details can be found on-line
in the
local newspaper and by
contacting the EVS program office.
There are all types and prices of
apartments available in Jonesboro,
and generally the cost of an
apartment is less than in other
cities of the same size. Many of our
students are able to afford an
apartment without having a room mate
to share expenses. Indeed there are
many apartment complexes located
adjacent to the campus.
A student can have
a non-EVS faculty member on his or
her Advisory Committee but cannot
have a non-EVS faculty as an
advisor. However, if the student
really wants a person who is not
currently an EVS faculty member to
be the advisor, that faculty member
could send a request to the
EVS
Program Committee to join the
EVS faculty.
The Graduate
Program in Environmental Sciences (EVS)
provides a limited number of
graduate assistantships in the fields of
biology, chemistry, agriculture, and
engineering. We review all
applications and assign some of our
stronger students to the GA positions on a competitive basis. If
you are one of the students chosen
for these graduate assistant
positions, all arrangements will be
made for you through the EVS office.
If you are admitted to the EVS
program but do not receive an
appointment as a graduate assistant
or a research assistantship through
a faculty member,
you are, of course, free to try to
find employment on your own. We can
help you identify those departments
that would be the most likely match
with your background and perhaps
give you the name of a person to
contact in that department. However,
we will not know which students have
been selected for graduate assistant
positions until March or April.
Before an
international student can be offered
a TA position, they must pass the
Test of Spoken English. This test is
offered both at ASU and
internationally by ETS. Information
about this test can be found at
http://graduateschool.astate.edu/intadm.htm.
For more
information, you can contact the
staff at the International Programs
office at ASU at
olp@astate.edu,
