History and Current Status

Establishment of the cross-disciplinary Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences (EVS) was initiated in April 1997 by faculty from the departments of chemistry, biological sciences, and political science in response to growing demands by graduate students for degree programs in Environmental Science and by the increasingly cross-disciplinary nature of research by faculty at the University. The program, first proposed as a doctoral program only was approved by the Board of Trustees and the Arkansas Higher Education Committee in 1997 and enrolled its first class of PhD students in Fall 1998.

The new program started with the original faculty in Environmental Biology as well as faculty from the departments of Chemistry, Political Science, and Economics.  Dr. David Harding, of Political Science, was appointed as first interim Director of the EVS, followed by Dr. Roger Buchanan of Biology, and most recently by Dr. Jerry Farris also of Biology. An open invitation was extended to the university faculty to participate in the program. The faculty participation has continued to grow, increasing from 10 faculty members in 1998 to over 30 in EVS in 2005. Faculty members hold appointments in nearly all departments and colleges on the main campus of Arkansas State University.

In the fall of 2003 a MS degree program in EVS was approved and now the Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences is the academic home to over 30 PhD students and eight MS students. New students are admitted on a continuous basis.  While most of the students are full-time, a small number are part-time, holding full-time jobs at the university, in state government, or local industry. Our graduates are employed as faculty members in universities around the world, consultants working with industry, government agencies, and research scientists with both universities and industry.

EVS has continued to streamline procedures for admission. The program actively recruits highly qualified students. Our average GRE score for the 2004-2005 class is 1350, and the average GPA is 3.4. Students receive EVS Fellowships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships on a competitive basis.

Our current director is Dr. Robyn Hannigan.
